Growing houseplants The most expensive part of starting out in this business is going to be getting a supply of soil. Soil is not a reusable item in this business, because you are selling it with your plants. Find a supplier that is both inexpensive and possibly delivers so you don’t have to haul soil, even if it is in bags. Another expense you will have in this business is purchasing a few plants that you are going to get your ‘starts’ from. Purchasing one plant, over a years time you can make ten or fifteen starts from one plant by using the leaves and a rooting hormone available in most all gardening centers. Some plants will require you to cut the roots or divide the plant to create new plants, so you will still be able to get the most for your initial investment. Choose houseplants that are long and vine like or flowering. These are some of the most popular houseplants. Houseplants that are unique like the flycatcher or the cactus are other plants that people will buy on impulse. You can sell your plants at flea markets, at the fair, in the newspaper, as gifts for others, and even in places like larger grocery stores or at a stand in the mall. You can advertise by creating business cards with your service listed. Create flyers that you can hang up anywhere a homeowner would see (like in the laundry mat, the grocery, in the hardware store). Have your parents tell every one they know that you are starting your own business and the orders will start coming in! More Ideas to make money |
